Make A Cheap Gate

To make a cheap gate, 11 feet x 3 feet 6 inches ( 3.3 metres x 1 metre) you will require about 100 feet (30 metres) of 3x1 inch ( 75 x 25mm) hardwood and 8 x three and half inch by 3/8 inch bolts.

You can nail the stays and also short pieces to fill in spaces at A and B. The top wooden gudgeon should be made out of a piece of 6 x 2 inch (150 x 50 mm) hardwood and would be better with a length of hoop iron or flat strap around the front, seen at C and D. The bottom one can be made of any piece of wood, and should be an inch (25mm) above the ground.

The latch has wooden peg put in E and F, and of course a mortise hole to fit into a post. If the gate is painted or tarred, the gate will last for many years.

You can of course go and buy a new galvanised steel gate which will last many years, but you pay dearly and this is no longer a guide about a low cost gate !
