General Books on Dogs

1. Anatomy Of The Dog written in 1944 by Capt. Will Judy. "Anatomy is the science which presents the detailed physical structure of an animal. It is essentially analytical, altho topographical anatomy concerns us most, being a study of various parts of the body with reference to surgery and medical diagnosis... This work is intended not in any way to displace the need for a veterinarian's services but to give the dog breeder and the dog owner an elementary or basic knowledge of anatomy in order better to understand the care of the dog and the conformation or fitting together of the various parts of the dog."

2. The Old English Sheepdog: From Puppyhood to Championship by Aubrey Hopwood written in 1905. This is a 173 page book with 31 illustrations. "The origin of the breed, alas ! like that of many others, lies buried in the mists of antiquity. Whether the prototype of our modern bob-tail was, as some authorities aver, a massive, powerful animal, whose duties included the guardianship of his flock against the attacks of bears and wolves, must remain a matter of conjecture. Certain it is that in foreign countries, where these conditions still obtain, and the duties of the sheep dog are those of a guardian rather than a drover's dog, the variety differs considerably from our own. The mighty Calabrian, or sheep dog of the Pyrenees, guardian of the flocks of the Abruzzi, stands over thirty inches high, and is built on the lines of a mastiff rather than a bob-tail. He is usually white in colour, with broad patches of tan or brown and a bushy tail.."

3. The Power of the Dog, with 20 plates in colour was written by Maud Earl in 1904. This is an illustrated book of 169 pages with information on The Bloodhound, Foxhound, Pointer, Greyhound, Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Welsh Terrier, Sealyham Terrier, Fox Terrier, West Highland White Terrier, Miniature Bulldog, Bull Terrier, Chow Chow, Pekingese, Miniature Pomeranian, English Springer, Boston Terrier, Griffon Bruxellois, Minature Poodle and Pekingese Puppy.

4. The Sporting Dog is 379 pages in length and was written by Joesph Graham in 1904, with many illustrations. "In technical classification the sporting division includes all the hounds, the Clumber, cocker and field spaniels, with the fox terriers and the rest of the sporting terrier list. Some writers add collies."

5. The Dog is 670 pages in length and contains three sections written by Dinks, Mayhew and Hutchinson. a. Dinks writes on: The breeding, Rearing, Breaking, Kennling, and Conditioning of Dogs. b. Mayhew contributes: Dogs, and Their Management; Being A new Plan For Treating The Animal, Based Upon A Consideration Of His Natural Temperament. c. Col. Hutchinson writes on: Dog Breaking: The Most Expeditious, Easy and Certain Method.

6. The Dog: Its Varieties and Management in Health was written by Stonehenge in 1896 and is 311 pages in length. "Where can we find a more certain, more constant, or more devoted friendship, a more faithful memory, a stronger attachment, more sincere abnegation, a mind more loyal and frank? The dog does not know what ingratitude is. He does not abandon his benefactor in danger or adversity. With joy he offers to sacrifice his life for those who feed him. He pushes his devotion so far as to forget himself. He does not recall the corrections, the unkind treatment, to which he has been subjected; he thirsts for caresses, while the indifference of those who are dear to him plunges him into deep distress. Noble creature!"

7. The Illustrated Book of The Dog: With An Appendix On Canine Medicine and Surgery, by Vero Shaw in 1881. This amazing publication is over 700 pages in length, with many illustrations. Vero Shaw was a 19th century British writer and illustrator, and was a prolific author of books on dogs, contributing to the Kennel Club standards for numerous breeds. He was highly acclaimed due to the accurate likenesses of his illustrations and his accurate writing descriptions.

Books on Training Dogs

8. Practical Dog Training: or Training vs Breaking written in 1882 by S.T. Hammond, 108 pages. "We have ever been possessed of a great love deep down in the heart for our canine pets, and this love is the main spring that governs all our actions toward them."

9. Dog Breaking: The Most Expeditious, Certain, And Easy Method, Whether Great Excellence or Only Mediocrity Be Required by Major-General Hutchinson written in 1865. This is a 403 page book with 40 illustrations. "I have endeavoured in the present edition to render more complete the lessons respecting Setters and Pointers. I have added somewhat on the subject of Spaniels, Eetrievers, and Bloodhounds. It has been my aim, also, to give a few useful hints regarding the rearing and preservation of Game. Dog-Breaking, so far from being a mystery, is an art easily acquired when it is commenced and continued on rational principles."

10. Training The Hunting Dog For The Field and Field Trials was written by B. Waters in 1901, over 280 pages. "The beginner generally falls into the error of attempting to train the dog before the latter knows anything about practical field work. The true method is to permit the dog to seek and find in his own manner, and then school his efforts to the use of the gun. Any efforts directed toward improving the dog's natural methods of hunting are likely to end in failure, or are likely to mar them."
