Soap and Candles

soap and candles

Soap and Candles: The earliest recorded evidence of the production of soap-like materials dates back to around 2800 BC in Ancient Babylon. This is based on a formula for soap consisting of water, alkali and cassia oil written on a Babylonian clay tablet around 2200 BC. In fact it is not all that difficult to do at home, and is a great skill to pass on to children.

If you would like to know how to soap and candles, we have 4 (four) wonderful old books on the subject. These 4 books are all on one CD, which is available for just $6.00 (including free postage) from our eBay Store called eBooks on CD.

"Setting aside the historically unknown facts as to who discovered or first made soap, and confining our attention to our modern industrial environment we need only be concerned with the fact that the extraction of lye from wood-ashes, Fig. 1 and its boiling up with the fat-remnants of the kitchen were the duty of the early housewife;... Numerous books on the subject of soap manufacture the writer at the time found instructive, but in later years, when engaged in practical work in the soap industry, the same books were found to be little less than worthless..." Leebert Lamborn 1920.

"While it is true that the works pertaining to the soapmaking industry are reasonably plentiful, books are quite rare, however, which, in a brief volume, will clearly outline the processes employed together with the necessary methods of analyses from a purely practical standpoint. In the work presented the author has attempted to briefly, clearly, and fully explain the manufacture of soap in such language that it might be understood by all those interested in this industry..." E.G. Thommssen 1922.

Included on this CD are the following 4 books:

1. Modern Soaps, Candles and Glycerin, by Leebert Lloyd Lamborn written in 1920 (709 pages).

2. The Handbook of Soap Manufacture, by Simmons and Appletone written in 1908 (171 pages).

3. Soap-Making Manual, by E.G. Thomssen, Ph.D. written in 1922 (258 pages).

4. Soaps and Candles, written by James Cameron in 1888 (314 pages).

These old books on how to make butter and cheese have been transcribed or scanned and made into PDF files. To read them you put the CD in your computer, and open up the files with Acrobat Reader (most computers have this application).
